Weft – threads of fabric that run horizontally
Warp – threads of fabric that run vertically

Count of Cloth – also known as the Yarn Count, consists of the number yarns per inch. The count determines the quality of the cloth. The lowest yarn counts comprise of thick and coarse fabrics while the highest counts create thinner and finer fabrics.

Balance – The balance in the fabric is the proportion of yarn going down the cloth (the “Warp”) to the yarn going across the cloth (the “Weft”). Every type of fabric has its own unique proportion. The different types of balance that are created are what give the fabrics its distinctive properties.

Ply – Two yarns that are twisted together to create one “quality” yarn and then tightly woven are known as Two-Ply Yarn. Single strands of yarn that each runs through the warp and weft that cross each other are known as One-Ply Yarn.

Broadcloth, Poplin
Broadcloth and Poplin are exactly the same. They are both constructed by each weft yarn passing over one warp yarn like a chess board. This results in a smooth yet sturdy cloth.

Pinpoint
Pinpoint fabrics are a simple form of the Oxfords. Pinpoints are woven in the same matter as broadcloths except the weft threads pass over two closely spaced warp yarns before passing under two yarns and repeating again.

Oxfords
Oxfords, which are as a basket weave fabric, tend to have a distinctive feel. This is because each warp and/or weft yarn passes over and under multiple yarns. This process is what gives it a nice texture.

Twill
The Twill fabric is made by weaving. It is characterized by the weft yarns passing over multiple warp yarns and then under one warp yarn. Each succeeding follows this suit but begins one warp yarn later. This creates the diverse diagonal rib effect.

Herringbone
The Herringbone is a popular variation of the Twill fabric. It is formed with the same process as the Twill but the construction reverses direction after a given number of yarns to allow the diagonal ribs to change direction by ninety degrees.

End-on-End
End fabric is woven just as a Broadcloth, except for the color of the threads used. In most cases either the warp or weft is comprised of a colored yarn while the opposite is made of a white yarn. This change in color gives the End-on-End fabrics its noticeable “crosshatched” look.

Dobby
The Dobby fabric is very distinct in comparison to others. This is because the Dobby is comprised of self designs (fabric having a design the same color as the base fabric). This is produced by inserting the weft yarn through the warp yarn at various places to give it a natural appearance.
